Gullane Golf Club, it could be argued, was a little late to the party when it was established in 1882. By then, there were several other courses, some of whom had been playing the game since the fifteenth century. It may not have been the first, but what an achievement it is to have been in existence for nearly one hundred and fifty years. Not only is the course still relevant, but it is actually thriving in the modern era.
Gullane is home to three courses, all of varying levels and distances. This is what makes it different. Gullane really does have something for everybody, no matter what shape their game is in. Course no.1 is the ancient links. This genuinely splendid course is one of the most scenic to be found anywhere in world golf. In particular, the view on your right from the tee at seven is a joy to behold, as you cast your gaze out over the bay that runs around the course. Every hole has its own story, with few similarities other than sharing the same soil. That is the great challenge of Gullane- you need to hit every shot in the bag to get ahead of it.
Gullane no.2 is just a couple of hundred yards shorter than the first, but it is still laid out much the same. Rambling fairways with plenty of roll on them, punishing bunkers and sweet, undulating greens on every hole. Gullane no.3 is just above five thousand yards, so it is a course for honing your game before tackling the first two. Still, there are plenty of opportunities to hit great golf shots in these parts. With these three courses less than five minutes away from Muirfield, Gullane is a destination primed for folks searching for a nice long golfing holiday.
