Carnoustie Golf Links is simply one of the greatest golf courses in the world, one that is cloaked in prestige and eminency. The grandfather of links golf, play here can be traced back as far as the sixteenth century. Its standing in the game has always been significant. The most impressive feature of Carnoustie is the considerable influence it has had on so many other great golf courses over the years.
The Open Championship has been played seven times at Carnoustie. The mark of a tough golf course is that it produces great winners and, given that the list of major winners on this course includes the likes of Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tom Watson, it is fair to say that Carnoustie is one of the toughest around. This calibre of winner underlines the quality of Carnoustie. The Open is due to return in 2018, where another great winner will be added to the ranks.
The course was revamped ahead of The Open in 1999, with a view to increasing the challenge that bunker play would provide. Carnoustie is now considered to be the home of the toughest bunkers in world golf. It is situated right on the Scottish east coast, bringing the North Sea frequently into view. When swirling winds abound, Carnoustie becomes a substantial battle between player and course.
There is no need to be over-awed, however. On a fine day, a round on Carnoustie’s championship course can be like taking a walk through some glorious meadowland. The natural links atmosphere is evident in the hilly mounds and the rolling terrain, and it is an experience that will be enjoyed even by those who have the worst rounds here.
