The Trump International Golf Links is a new golfing wonder in Scotland. A links behemoth, the course plays at just over 7400 yards. It has only come into existence in recent years, and is a pet project of American property developer Donald Trump. Trump’s roots extend back to Scotland, and this is his contribution to the country’s national game.
The course was designed by Dr. Martin Hawtree, a third generation course architect. His design has seen the course mapped out with tremendously large bunkers, which shield one hole from another. It is just one of many examples of the classic links style embedded into the course DNA. Trump International may not be old, but it certainly is links golf.
The classic pattern of two out-and-back sets of nine holes brings golfers on a visually exciting tour of the grounds. The dunes will lead you towards the beach, and a wild enough tee shot could land you out there. The views of the North Sea as you climb up to the tee are magnificent, with the unspoilt images a breath of fresh air to competitors.
The defensive positioning of the bunkers are a big factor here. Off the tee at the thirteenth, the player is faced with four bunkers directly in his line. The two up the centre are somewhat short, but the next two are long enough that, if the middle of the fairway is not found, trouble is waiting for you. It is a feature of this golf course that honours the traditions of links. As the ground becomes more mature every year, Trump International will become one of the great golfing adventures.
