Quinta do Lago brought Algarve golf design to a new level. It has quite a strong British feel to it, with American standards to the course’s design and infrastructure. This championship course, was opened in 1974 and has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times being a favourite to many tour players.
The course itself is mature and set new standards in the Algarve on opening. It favours the long hitter and requires each player to pick a particular route to score well. Each hole has one easy route and for the player who sees it they can produce sub-par figures. It is an enjoyable course for players of all standards but requires skill to score well with generally wide fairways, Large sloping greens, attractive bunkering and some water.
Strategic bunkering, water hazards and large contoured greens are the main challenges. The signature hole is the beautiful par-3 15th with a long carry (190 metres) over a large lake to a well-guarded green set amongst pine trees.
Quinta da Lago south is a truly wonderful course, ideally designed to test the scratch golfer but can also be enjoyed by a higher handicap golfer, the layout favours the long hitter but correct placement of shots is needed to score well. The course encouraged other courses in Portugal to raise their standards, so playing Quinta da lago south will allow you to experience where the history of great courses in Portugal arose, you wouldn’t have such a wonderful choice of courses in Portugal without it.
