Enniscrone
Enniscrone Golf Club is a sumptuous links course in County Sligo. Sitting on the banks of Killala Bay, it is right at the mouth of the River Moy Estuary. It was originally designed by famed Irish architect Eddie Hackett, which gave it instantaneous credibility in the golfing community. The addition of further holes down the years has solidified its standing, and Enniscrone stands out as one of the gems of the West Coast.
The featured course is known as “The Dunes” because of the outstanding natural dunes that are to be found all over the area. They are thought to be among the most impressive in Europe, and they can be seen to run along the perimeter of most holes. This hilly natural climate makes it an ideal setting for a links golf course.
The duel between player and course begins from the off, with a trying dogleg tee shot from the first tee. The second fairway is extremely narrow, making it a tough shot for players of all calibres. However, it is a par five, so if you can find that fairway, a low score will likely be your reward. Holes three and four are par three and five respectively, so the opportunity is there for a strong start, if you can negotiate the dunes. The twelfth hole, known as “Cnoc na gCorp”, is another daring dogleg tee shot, but one played in a magnificent setting, surrounded by mounds of dunes and long straw grass. The last four holes are equally striking, showing the variety of imagery in Enniscrone as you play out towards the Atlantic Ocean.
