The Celtic Manor Resort is home to three wonderful championship golf courses in the south of Wales. This top golfing destination in Wales is located just a short drive from Cardiff, and is very accessible. With such prestigious courses on offer, no golfing trip to Wales is complete without a visit to Celtic Manor.
The Roman Road course is the elder statesman of the Celtic Manor golf courses, but is still only preparing to celebrate its twentieth birthday. First opened in 1995, it has been rated as “the top inland course in Wales” which, given some of the illustrious courses in that category, is quite the compliment. The Roman Road hosted the Wales Open from 2005 through 2007, another proud achievement of this burgeoning modern golf course.
There are a number of formidable but enjoyable holes along the Roman Road, but the pinnacle may well be at the eighth. This par three is 203 yards from the championship tees, where you face an uphill tee shot that has to find the right line to weave between the trees which defend the green. Precision is a must, as depending on a one putt finish for par may be asking a lot of yourself.
The Roman Road’s undulating layout makes for a very interesting golfing experience. The hilly landscape almost sways as you move between downhill and uphill lies. The Roman Road was the standard bearer that first gave Celtic Manor its place on the golfing circuit, and it is easy to see why.
