The Island Golf Club is one of Ireland’s great golfing treats. Located on the edge of the east coast in Fingal, County Dublin, this superlative links golf course is a classic. The robust terrain is dominated by huge sand dunes and typically features a healthy swirling wind. The course is found in the midst of breath taking landscape, with Donabate Beach, the Broadmeadow Estuary and the Irish Sea surrounding it from all sides.
Delve into the golf course, and you will find a great selection of holes. You will start off at “Partridge Hollow”, as the first hole is known. It is not the most difficult hole you will ever face, but the route is gorgeous. You drive down the cavern shielded by twenty-five feet dunes, and catch a glimpse of the sea on your walk up towards the green. The signature hole comes at the par three thirteenth, by the name of “Broadmeadow”. The conservatives will lay up and find themselves in a recoverable position short of the green. The more daring player will go for the green in one, but run the risk of finding the beach and a probable bogey.
This is a wonderful links course that no player should miss out on. In 2014, Golf Digest Ireland ranked The Island as the no.13 course in the country. Its popularity is inextricably linked to the tremendous environment the course is built around. It is a jewel in the Dublin golfing circuit, and would be a fantastic addition to any golfing tour of the capital.
